Coast Guard suspends search for missing boater near Cedar Key

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.— The Coast Guard suspended search efforts Sunday evening for a missing boater one mile offshore of Cedar Key.

Deceased is David Savioe, 33, and missing is Michael Sedor, 39.

A Coast Guard Station Yankeetown crew discovered a body matching the description of  Savioe, Saturday, shortly after 7 a.m. near his sunken vessel “Dog House.”

Coast Guard crews searched approximately 125 hours covering 1,332 square nautical miles.

“One of the toughest parts of the job is suspending search and rescue efforts, and we do not make this decision lightly,” said Capt. Matthew Thompson, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg. “It is only after the Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Levi Sheriff’s County Office, and local partner agencies saturated every possible area that we must make this call.”

A good Samaritan notified Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 11 a.m., Wednesday reporting debris in the water. Upon notification, watchstanders deployed Coast Guard crews to search the area with the help of  Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Levi Sheriff’s County Office diving crews.

Involved in the search were:

– Coast Guard Station Yankeetown 27-foot boat crew

– The Coast Guard Cutter Crocodile crew

– The Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback crew

–  Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater HC-130 and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrews

– Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission marine crews 

– Levi Sheriff’s County Office crews

Coast Guard recovers 1 boater, crews continue searching for missing boater near Cedar Key

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.— The Coast Guard recovered the body of one unresponsive boater and continues searching, Sunday, for the remaining person missing from the sunken vessel “Dog House” near Cedar Key.

Deceased is David Savioe, 33, and missing is Michael Sedor, 39.

Coast Guard crews have searched for nearly 60 hours covering more than 948 square nautical miles.

A good Samaritan notified Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 11 a.m., Wednesday, reporting debris in the water. The watchstanders deployed Coast Guard crews to search the area with the help of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Levi County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and loved ones of David,” said Capt. Matthew Thompson, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg. “Our rescue crews have been diligently continuing the search and rescue efforts to find Michael.”

USCG is searching for two men missing after their vessel sank near Cedar Key Florida. A good samaritan notified USCG at 11 AM on Dec. 29, 2021, reporting debris and items belonging to vessel Dog House, a 31 foot boat. 

All vessels are requested to keep a sharp lookout and report any sightings to USCG.

Coast Guard, partner agencies searching for 2 in Cedar Key

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Multiple Coast Guard air and surface assets and crews continue searching, Thursday, for two men who went missing after their vessel sank near Cedar Key.

A good Samaritan notified Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at approximately at 11 a.m., Wednesday, reporting debris and items belonging to the vessel 31-foot vessel Dog House. Searches have been conducted between Cedar Key and west of Sea Horse Reef.

The Coast Guard crews searching are: 

A Station Yankeetown 29-foot response boat 

The Cutter Crocodile, 

An Air Station Clearwater H-60 jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules aircraft 

Also searching are Florida Fish and Wildlife officers and Levi County Sheriff’s Office with marine units.
