Update June 27, 2021

The family of Captain Kenneth Harold Gordon of S/V Madimoo has advised as follows: “Just wanted to let you know I received a call from my dad.  They are OK. The Iridium phone stopped working and they hit a freak storm somewhere in the Indian Ocean which ripped their sails. They were able to motor most of the way back towards Indonesian when the motors also stopped working. Anyways, they have made it and are currently getting everything sorted out. “

Vessels in the area of Kuede, island of Sumatra, Indonesia are asked be on the lookout, call for S/V Madimoo on the SSB or VHF radio and report any sightings to Eddie@boatwatch.org.

S/V Madimoo, a Cook Island flagged, 14 meter catamaran, left Langkawi, Malaysia Sunday mid-day June 13, 2021, to sail to Richards Bay, South Africa with Captain Kenneth Harold Gordon, age 72, a South African and his mate, Alan, a Malaysian.

S/V Madimoo intended to make the passage from Langkawi Royal Yacht Club without stopping but on June 15, 2021 at 11:46 UTC, his AIS showed a change in course. headed towards the north coast of the island of Sumatra (Indonesia), specifically to a port named Kuede.

S/V Madimoo’s original float plan had him sailing from Langkawi, Malaysia to Richards Bay, South Africa. The plan was to head straight across the Indian Ocean passing to the south of Madagascar and then heading to the South African coast.

The family of Captain Kenneth Gordon has been unable to reach him on his Iridium phone and fears the AIS system has been turned off.

Captain Gordon’s has an Iridium satellite phone but it is not answering. He has Satellite Navigation, AIS Class B, MMSI number 518100594 and a 2-2.5m rubber ducky boat with small outboard engine (maybe 10hp).
