The US Coast Guard is searching for 10 people missing at sea, after being reported Thursday, after the rescue of eight people and the recovery of two bodies, 16 miles south of Key West.
All boats should keep a sharp lookout and report any sightings to the USCG.
MIAMI – The US Coast Guard is searching for 10 people missing at sea, after being reported Thursday, after the rescue of eight people and the recovery of two bodies, 16 miles south of Key West.
The crew of the Resolute cutter rescued eight people and the crew of a rapid response boat from the Key West Coast Guard Station recovered two deceased who were taken ashore.
Survivors reported that the group left Puerto de Mariel, Cuba, on Sunday and their boat capsized on Wednesday night. The survivors remain aboard a Coast Guard vessel where they will receive food, water, shelter and basic medical care.
“Our first responders are focused on finding survivors,” said Petty Officer Seth Haynes, supervisor of the Key West Station command center. “We will continue to search throughout the night for people reported missing, and if any sailors see or hear anything, provide assistance if possible, and report to the Coast Guard.”
During a routine patrol, the Resolute cutter crew saw several people in the water and notified the Key West Station guards, who dispatched air and sea assets to assist with the rescue.
