Newport police officer wounded in shooting with suspect on stolen sailboat
Newport police said an officer was shot Wednesday in a confrontation with an armed suspect on a sailboat that was reported stolen. They said the suspect was killed.
WABC reported that a sailboat was stolen from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City late Saturday night. Harbormasters around the region were notified to be on the lookout for it.
A boat matching its description was seen anchored in Newport on Wednesday, and police officers and members of the harbormaster went to investigate at about 9 a.m.
Police said as officers came alongside the boat, a man on the bow fled below deck, armed himself with a gun, and then shots were fired.
Police Chief Ryan Duffy said the officer was shot in the “lower extremity” and was taken to Newport Hospital, where the officer was stable.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was dead.
A heavy police presence was visible in the Point neighborhood near Storer Park and Elm Street Pier, and traffic was being detoured.
The chief said the area would likely be blocked off for the rest of the day.
Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office said in statements that they were involved in the investigation, which is standard when police are involved in a shooting.

Bolo for Stolen SV Pathfinder New Jersey
SV Pathfinder, a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40 custom Yawl, was stolen August 22, 2026, from Liberty Harbor Marina, Jersey City, New Jersey. It was last seen north of the Verrazzano bridge heading south. AIS was turned off and sails were down. The owner estimates the suspect had approximately 25 hours of motor time.
